4 Benefits of Moving Back Home with your Parents

Congratulations! You just graduated college. It was the best four years of your life. Partying all night, wearing sweatpants to class, paying for food with your pre–paid meal card... ah, paradise.

But now you've got to move back in with your parents at home because you don't have a job, or maybe you had a job but it's a tough economy and you got laid off.

D'oh!

These scenarios may seem like a nightmare, but in reality, moving back home for a while can be a great opportunity to get a head start on your future.

Here are some of the positive aspects of making the move back home with your parents... keep them in mind to help keep your sanity when your mom reminds you it's time to brush your teeth at 9:00 pm. On a Friday.

1) You can become more responsible with your living space.

In your dorm, or wherever you may have been living, you were allowed to slack off and wait two months before doing laundry or cleaning dishes. Living under your parents' roof again will whip you into shape and encourage you to clean up after yourself. This will teach you to take more pride in the condition of your next living space– whether you live with some friends, a significant other, or on your own.

2) You can become more considerate of those you live with.

When you were living away from home, you could come and go as you pleased; you didn't have to check in with cohabitants. Living back at home will encourage you to be more thoughtful when it comes to letting people know if you're running late or if you won't make it to a family dinner.

3) You can actually save some money.

More likely than not, your parents won't charge you rent when you move back home. Sure, they may ask you to pick up some groceries from time to time, but odds are you'll be able to save a fair amount of money under their roof. This is the perfect opportunity to tuck some cash away in a savings account; not only will this teach you to be more fiscally responsible, it can give you a jumpstart on the funds you'll need to move out again. 4) You can enjoy the perks of home.

Upgrading from cafeteria food to home cooked meals? That's a no–brainer! And if you're lucky enough, you'll also upgrade from a pile of dirty laundry that lingers for weeks to clean clothes stacked on your bed. Enjoy being taken care of again by your first caregivers– your parents! But don't be a shiftless mooch – show your appreciation by cooking a meal for your family once in a while, doing the dishes or tackling the laundry. Taking the initiative to help your family in these ways will only make it feel more natural to follow suit in your next living situation.

Moving back home with your parents may seem like a total drag, but don't let it get you down. Instead, keep these advantages in mind, prepare yourself for the next chapter of your life, and make the most of the time you can spend with your loved ones!

Good luck!
